Even a few sentences in, we can tell the Book of Revelation is unlike anything else in the Christian Testament. But the truth is, there is really nothing like it in the Hebrew Scriptures either, although there are many references to various prophetic imagery and events from the Hebrew scriptures.
Apocalypse
Typically, this sort of document would be called an Apocalypse, which literally means, “uncovering” or “revealing,” and references the complete and final destruction of the world, leading to a new world. The uncovering or revealing is the parting of the curtain to show the heavenly or divine perspective of what is happening now and what will come.
Distinctive Apocalyptic Marks
According to one scholar,[1] the Book of Revelation shares many similarities with other apocalyptic literature.
The first similarity comes in the author naming himself—in this case, “John.” Many scholars think “John” is a pseudonym for someone writing either from the community of believers built up around the apostle John’s gospel and teaching, or wanting to write in the style and spirit of John. Other scholars accept “John” as being the apostle himself, at the very advanced age of eighties or nineties, in exile on the Isle of Patmos.
Encouragement for those suffering under persecution
Revelation—as apocalyptic literature was meant to do—was written to people who were experiencing suffering and persecution, and were in much need of encouragement to persevere, to keep their faith during prolonged crisis.
Highly symbolic
And to do this well, such authors employed a great deal of symbolism, including numbers, colors, supernatural beings such as angels and demons, and fantastical creatures such as chimeras and dragons.
Supernatural
In order to source this revealing, the writer would speak of visions held in trance, and interpreted by an angel, or other heavenly being. Sometimes there would be prophetic dreams, laden with portent, or mystical journeys that transported the writer from the earthly realm into the spiritual realm,
Destruction and transformation
Typically, apocalyptic writing would trace a story line through history, coming through the present, then moving forward into the future, unveiling cosmic secrets about what is to come—massive transformation that will involve destruction and recreation.
Laden in liturgy
Often there is some form of liturgical setting—temples, inner sanctuaries, altars and fires, hymns and worship, rituals of purification.
Reality revealed
The whole apocalypse is meant to enhance vision so that the truth of the present can be seen in its ultimate reality, the reality that is so often hidden to the naked, human eye, but that is always available to see from the spiritual, divine vantage.
Good and evil
And what we see, reality disrobed, is dualistic. There is good, and there is evil, two discrete categories with no gray in between. What is happening is no surprise to God, for God is sovereign, and what God determines will come to pass. God has always been sovereign, God has had a purpose and plan from before time began that continues on into eternity. And God is seeing to it that God’s intentions will always be fulfilled.
Without God, destruction is inevitable
And the storyline of each apocalypse is that, with humanity at the helm of our destiny, the world is headed for destruction and death. Time and again, God has allowed humanity to have our way, and our way has consistently, inevitably, led to selfishness, cruelty, violence, wreckage, and annihilation. And so, the last chapter of humanity’s story will be just like the first.
Our only hope lies in God’s supernatural, powerful, radical intervention.
So, reading Revelation will involved the same kind of perspective needed to read the apocalypses written in the Hebrew Testament, and will also require a working knowledge of those prophetic writings.
But Wait, There Is More!
And now we are getting to the nitty gritty of reading Revelation. Because it is not just an apocalypse, it is also a letter, and it is presented as prophecy (rather than, say, an allegory).
Read as a letter
As a letter would in antiquity, Revelation begins with a salutation and ends with a blessing. Within the letter are seven more letters. The intention of Revelation, then, was most likely as a circular meant to be read to all the addressed churches then passed along to other outside churches.
Understood as prophecy
Within the letter are prophetic utterances given very much in the style of the Hebrew prophets, who would act as the mouthpiece of God delivering the very words of God. As the saying goes, “From God’s lips to your ears.” As the prophets of old enjoined, so John also wrote,
Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written in it; for the time is near.
“See, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
And he said to me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near.”
I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book; if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

How to Read Revelation
What is the balance, then, in how we read such a unique and gripping document?
Down through the centuries, Christians have taken three basic approaches.
Historical
The writer was referencing their own place and time, disclosing the truth about what was happening then, using symbolical language.
Idealistic
The writer was speaking about themes and truths that transcend time and place, seeking to convey spiritual truth that would encourage believers in every era.
Futuristic
The writer’s main purpose was to write of what will come, and to encourage especially those believers who will find themselves living in that cataclysmic time.
The Bible Project

Hi Sister/Professor in Christ Jesus! Great that you sent this out today and to me it is a God Send being timely as well as inspiring to me; as I’ve been struggling with what I am witnessing in the world and even in my immediate personal sphere of life.
Thank you for this presentation that’s very poignant and clear to me that The Book of Revelation was written through Divine Inspired Prophesy for all people of all times but most assuredly for those people that would be caught up in the Latter Days or final stage of God’s plan and the culmination of the material world to its literal end.
This statement became my focus immediately upon reading that section of the article!

There are more reasons than not and signs to believe we are in this period right now! That is why I see it in the Futuristic sense quite literally.
These two other points in the article that I quote here to me can be seen readily throughout our present day “Ways of The World” system of corruption, deception and turmoil; an absolutely unprecedented period that nothing previous even came close to being so complexly, wantonly evil in my humble opinion, and after it; there can be no room for anything other than the history of its destruction and final end!

We see a secularism and radical departure from the people basing their existence on God our Creator and His kingdom to come, to one where man is fast approaching a material world belief system, of course spurned on by Satan, that places man at the apex of this creation; whereby men become their own self-styled gods. I could be too biased the way I look at my fellow mankind, but, I see an ugliness flourishing rampantly throughout the world, and a tendency for the masses to be easily duped like herd animals or become sheeple! Something I see in the social media graze alone indicates this loss of humanity and where people are taking the exit ramp from humanity to stupidity and destruction! Far worse than during the period when Moses brought God’s Ten Commandments down from Mount Sinai to find God’s people worshiping a gilded calf!

Here were a few thoughts that came to mind immediately upon reading this attitude about self-worship and ultimately not serving God, being displayed online that was all justified with, God loves me more than anything, so I can do and be fine with Him each day. Apparently saying, I just have to worry about me and all those things out there, that’s not my problem! But, only things that will boost my ego or favor with the world, then I’ll give some lip service, play the game; “the way of the world.”
Yes, Jesus Christ dies on the cross for our sins, but, that doesn’t mean we have a license to be phony hypocrites and enjoy the party while it lasts. It’s up to each individual to produce a “genuine faith” full of humility and sorrow for what wrongs we have done; having a contrite heart full of love for Him which we show daily by being willing to pick up our own crosses and follow him, giving up the pleasures and vanities of this world, making our own ultimate sacrifice in order to be found truly worthy of forgiveness and eternal life, by not being lukewarm and a pretender, who gives plenty of lip service, but underneath all of that doesn’t do enough lifting of that cross that each of us has to carry until the day we drop.
Back in October I wrote this which since then I can’t help but to believe even more now is actually what is happening!

Your passion comes through in your writing, Brother in Christ!
I am not sure where the Lord is going to take me as I read the Revelation of Jesus Christ to John. I have traditionally only read Revelation as a prophecy of the future, with the surety that the Rapture is but a moment away. It was only about 150 years ago that Revelation was first taught from this perspective, that the Rapture would come, and then the Tribulation.
The first century church believed they were living -in- the Tribulation. What we are seeing today is actually, in some ways, tamer than the Greco-Roman world of that day, when babies were routinely left to die on the steps of the local official government buildings. It was, in fact, illegal to rescue those abandoned babies, who had been rejected by their fathers.
But the Christians risked their lives to rescue them!
(Sounds familiar, doesn’t it.)
Enslaved persons, both male and female, had no rights, and were even considered as non-persons in a number of ways. They were expected—both male and female—to be sexually available to their masters, and anyone else their master chose. There was no such thing as “rape” when it came to a slave. It is no surprise slaves flocked to Jesus and to the Gospel.
I could go on, but I won’t. What was considered normal and acceptable in that day is sickening to us today.
And even the Greco-Roman culture didn’t hold a candle to the kind of debauchery and wickedness Sodom and Gomorrah apparently flaunted. Or, for that matter, the world of Noah’s day. We can know that, because of how God did away with those Cities on the Plain, and before that, scrubbed the world clean by the Great Deluge.
So, though we see disturbing trends in the cultures of today’s world, we are still not quite where the world was in those precious times.
That said, between you and me (and whoever else reads this note) Leviticus 18:24-28 is a watchword for those who understand it.

People have never been lilywhite and free from foulness, so in a sense nothing has changed; other than humans have gotten much more sophisticated and wicked in their methodology to commit atrocities!
Are humans walking around now “holier than thou” and living to the “highest standards possible” with all of the history we now have to know truly the difference between doing what is right versus doing what is wrong? I think not and the human race proves continually that it is corrupted to the core; in that all things man does, corruption can be and very often is found permeating those things, along with selfishness and wicked vanity playing a huge part in human endeavor; not benevolence or self-sacrifice. Do we see what the medical profession, Big Pharma, corporate media along with the bought and paid for government authorities have done in plain sight for the last couple of years!
According to the historical record we have plenty to go by when it comes to “Learning from our Mistakes,” what humanity has done wrong and therefore to thusly enable mankind to move forward not backward; making proper adjustment! That clearly is not the case and the human “Ways of The World” only get worse!

Leaving babies on steps doesn’t even begin to compare to modern current debauchery committed by mankind; having young women abort babies so they can be sliced up and used in radical experimentation like the grafting of human tissue to rats in a lab, even on a genetic level splicing chromosomes to create a new species! Or diabolical people like Soros and the Clinton’s who from some circles it’s said have used baby stem cells or plasma, made from unborn or day of delivery human beings to enhance their own physical health or beauty! Or as in China human beings are targeted and taken away to have organs harvested, and don’t you think there is a black market now for this, and Americans who are close to China’s CCP, AKA Biden’s, Fauci, Gates, Soros, Klaus Schwab and so on aren’t equipped to make such purchases? This is not even the end of it, because it is a known fact that human babies are now being used in satanic rituals, while even the Presbyterian Church advocates and promotes abortion saying it is good and right; so we have a Christian Church saying like former NYC mayor Bloomberg to women who worked for him; to Kill It!

I’ve been thinking about my recent commentary to you and very early here I thought about how something you said ties-in with what I’m pondering and in particular what I was saying to you in response to your last comment.

I know my thoughts were very emotional, so much so that what I said could be interpreted as almost condescending or disturbed by what you had written, so I want to make it clear that I never intend such a thing toward you personally, nor was there any negative reaction to what you said. Yes my emotion was very strong not toward you but “toward the subject” that your writing was featuring or focused upon; and I tend to not sugarcoat or beat around the bush as they say! I’m very upset with, and for fear of being misunderstood; I must say not at God, but as only a mere mortal sensitive man about what God allows, and to me the jungle vicious atmosphere that this world we are in is taking on as very real, and to me completely out of control on so many levels; being vile or evil. It’s getting hard to accept it and find a good enough reason for God to not have stopped or at least stepped up His precious ultimate conclusion of what to me is such an abhorrent mess and for lack of a better term; a chaotic quagmire of debauchery and ugliness! Why the heck is this necessary now with all mankind has sustained through already over the millennia, why should this madness and stupidity be worth putting humanity through this ringer to whatever end, which just doesn’t add up! I mean for gosh sake this world to me is so much worse than the worst epic disasters or nightmares humanity has experienced anytime in the past to where now human beings are so ugly taking pleasure in tormenting and ruining so much good; to where we now have bizarre completely wicked people steering the direction of the entire human race toward absolute evil, satanic most vile ugliness, to where a majority of the human beings are accepting the slaughter and planned increased mass murder, the likes of which this sorry race of beings has ever caused for itself! It’s too ugly to accept it and I can’t demand anything, but, I keep asking God what are you waiting for, will you hurry up and make you big move and slam this madness out of the universe once and for all and just get it over with; I’m sick of it! People are turning more and more ugly and stupid in so many ways; what the heck is the point! I’m nothing, I’m only a stupid sinner myself, but “I can see the forest for the trees” and we live in such a “phony twisted world of so much lack” and it’s only getting exponentially worse by the day, so why? It’s truly nuts! Sure I see so many beautiful things still in it, but, what subject that good and innocence to horror and misery; I’m so fed up with this crazy world!
A metaphor to me is like the Francis Ford Coppola Film from back in 1978 Apocalypse Now which was pointing out the madness that Col. Kurtz played by Marlon Brando was seeing in the Vietnam War and how he went renegade, knowing that the US Government was just toying with a mad war and making it more protracted and uglier with more suffering; and he says at one point if he had troops like some of those hardened warriors on the enemy side, the Viet Cong Communists he would be able to end the whole conflict in no time! As he is dying in the scene as the CIA operation or hit by Captain Willard is carried out to kill him or cancel his military contract, he lays there bleeding to death saying “the horror, the horror!”
A legitimate news reporting yesterday was indicating from reliable Intel sources that our own government has a current hit list of doctors and officials who treat Covid conventionally without any hospitalization and avoid the vaccines and certain death for many who are treated with this forced coerced protocol in place; so the plan is to soon start eliminating these resisters who are slowing down the global plan by devils! The preservation of life and promoting of truth is being attacked; as additionally reported was the fact that the couple in Canada that owned the company that manufactures Ivermectin were eliminated; rubbed out! I hate to say it but that is where we seem to be as a race now and like a dying horse that needs to be put out of its misery, we have to wait for the mess to get wrapped up by God because nothing earthly or humanly possible is going to change this paradigm of death! I still say as I must, I don’t want to be mad at God, but I’m getting to a point where I know how and why Kurtz felt that disgust toward the politicians and US military command, who toying with everyone, kicking the can down the road as it were, of just letting a suffering dying horse drag out; looking at that death and suffering as if its ok to let the devil torment and make everyone suffer more and more which is the case now! They even had a dialog in the story where they referred to “Operation Archangel” which was a battle plan, and that is what we need now in my humble opinion, is for Saint Michael the Archangel to bring it on and swarm this planet with the “final sword of justice” from God Almighty and kill it, not just keep allowing the innocent unborn to be butchered and used for lab rat experiments and satanic rituals!!! This is beyond madness and to me actually already “Hell On Earth Now!”
Sorry but I know you have great wisdom and knowledge in many academic and religious areas, so I figure you must get it, that which God is doing and saying here more than I ever will! I’m sorry it’s too sad and horrible to think about all of it and see it for what it is, so ugly! Everything is so corrupt now and the worst people on the planet are running the show which is a completely upside-down madhouse, everything is corrupted, even Christianity is being more twisted and perverted than anytime before in its history; it’s all becoming a big joke and the joke is on us suckers?
One thing that cinched my view lately is when somebody highly virtuous and in the theological world of Christianity I knew died, and I had many opportunities to talk over time with him; and this event along with other relatives or people I keep hearing about having just died, in which cases some say; well they were getting old and got Alzheimer’s or some such thing! But, I know better; that many of these especially the saintly man were targeted or done away with which is what the US Evil Administration is working on doing to a large extent with many citizens; even now as they attempt to purge the military of the faithful patriots! Just like the evil devil Trudeau up in Canada is planning with camps already in place! If this isn’t hell on earth yet; all hell is about to break loose in short order I say!
To me there is no excuse for this misery and debauchery to be allowed anymore it needs to END!

Now then those excerpts in my long commentary to your article relate perfectly to what I just wrote this week which I wasn’t planning but just last week in a posting I put together about the “Thin Red Line” another epic motion picture about WWII which Jim Caveizel played a very important pivotal role in as Witt back in that late 90’s production, and when I first saw it back then I said immediately after the film; that guy who I had never seen in any movie before was a Christ like figure to me, and wouldn’t you know it several years later he was picked by Mel Gibson to portray our Savior Jesus in “The Passion of The Christ!” Now interesting to me was how I put that essay together last week and in one of the movie clips I used, I found out later after I posted it, that faintly in the sequence of shots of Witt someone had edited in Marlon Brando’s voice from the Apocalypse Now movie which is Brando saying, “The Horror, The Horror” as he dies! Now you after some lapse of time just today released this reply; which triggered all of these connecting dots in my mind to pull together perfectly which can mean only one thing so far, which is the divine is working in His mysterious ways and for good reason as always! They don’t say, but we can safely assume that it will be those who have something to gain from the modification of your actions and behaviors.

To me it looks like the human race has been like a bunch of total to the hilt alcoholics in complete denial as they run slip-shod to the precipice hard and fast!

Thank yo so much, brother in Christ Lawrence, for your passion and for your commitment to speaking out what the Lord is giving you.
One of the things I love so much about the Body of Christ is the diversity of expression among us, that so many perspectives and understanding can come through from the same Spirit Who indwells us all. I remember wondering out loud, years ago, why God did not inspire the writing of God’s word to be more along the lines of a systematic theology textbook. Why could not God give us a list of precepts to follow, and definitions of things, and a systematic theology? Why did God instead give us so much story? And so much description without commentary? Why did God preserve troubling stories without any explanation concerning them?
Why did Jesus speak in parables? I have heard so many different ideas about what Jesus was teaching.
Why did God give prophecy in dreams and cryptic visions instead of simply telling the prophets “thus-and-so will happen on this date”?
Why is there so much poetry and metaphor and allegory in the scriptures? Would it not have been better, in matters so crucial for the human race, to use plain speech instead?
But the longer I thought about it, the more I understood that stories are so much more powerful, and they touch the hearts, minds, and souls of people from every time and culture. Stories get us talking with each other, they keep us engaged with each other, and they teach us thing words simply are inadequate to convey.
So it is surely Spirit-inspired for you to draw truths from the stories portrayed in films. It is important work. God be your strength and your guide,

Well said my sister Joanne! Right off the top I have to say I understand you, and I was always an inquisitive guy since childhood even getting myself into discomfort as for example when I was in elementary school I think it was the second grade; one day while home with a cold I was in the basement checking out my older brothers electric trains and decided to see who was inside the locomotive driving it so I figured out how to take it apart but couldn’t put Humpty-Dumpty together again, and so got caught when I wasn’t supposed to not be touching them without supervision! This says a lot about we children of God and why we have the issues we have so often doesn’t it!
But in what you referred to here, that perhaps I at least can believe I obviously have some of the thinking or creativity which God possesses infinitely; as I do like to put things into a visual sense of thinking, more spatial relation or abstract conceptualization! Maybe if I had stayed in academia fully during my youth and chose a different career path it would have very much been philosophy, but more into theoretical physics trying to dig deeper into the meaning of reality as we perceive it and beyond! But God in His infinite wisdom, “the alpha and the omega” is never wrong and knows all things including anything we may ponder or ask lots of questions about; but as my Dad would tell me; “don’t you think there are things you’re not supposed to know?”
This brings us to the Crème Le Crème; when wonderful Job asked, oh but why Lord God? And of course Job being such a near perfect good man, something I can’t compare to was told: “3Now brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform Me. 4Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. 5Who fixed its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched a measuring line across it?” Job 38: 3-5
I get shivers, I love this verse so much and what a great man Job was and how loving our God is here in pointing out this reality and how God sets the order or protocol that we must abide to!
Another that my Dad would say to me when I got off on my analytical tangents and was wanting answers, he would say; “yes you know some things but you know enough to get yourself in trouble!” Ouch and he was right; because I did a few times not only when a boy with train sets; even the keep your nose out of other people’s business is imperative to keep in mind!
I guess this says something about our flawed and fallen human nature; just like when it all started with Adam and Eve stepping over the line or not taking the advice of our Creator; our actual Father in heaven! Thank you Joanne! You’re a good sister in Christ Jesus for sure! Amen.
