John was saying this man, this construction worker from Nazareth, was Almighty God himself.
Gospel of John: Jesus is God
The scribes understood that Jesus was claiming the same essence as God. In fact the Pharisees told Him, "It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God."
