Raised a Princess, Married to a King
This series of Bible studies seeks to retell the stories of women who were divinely called and empowered to do great things. Many of them rose to the occasion, and a few very famously did not. Often, the tragedies and triumphs in their lives are missed, and their stories are told from perspectives other than with the honor and dignity they deserve.

Michal, Passion and Dignity
Embedded within the story of David, Israel’s most beloved king, and of whom the Lord said was a man after God’s own heart, is the tragic story of Michal, a Benjamite princess and daughter of king Saul.
This thirty-page book includes the retelling of Michal’s story, a fifteen-question Bible study, and link to a twenty-minute multi-media presentation of Michal’s account, tracing the wounding of a young girl’s soul to a now middle-aged and discarded queen.
From Beloved to “Be Gone”
Embedded within the story of David, Israel’s most beloved king, and of whom the Lord said was a man after God’s own heart, is the tragic story of Michal, a Benjamite princess and daughter of king Saul. Her account begins in Late Bronze Age Canaan—that is to say, for the Israelite tribes. The twelve tribes of Israel were still in the throes of coalescing into a kingdom, beleaguered by battle after battle with the powerful Philistines.
The Philistines had mastered the art of smelting iron, however, and held their new technology in tight control. Throughout the accounts of Joshua and Judges, Israelites had to travel to Philistine territory in order to trade for iron implements or have their own iron artifacts repaired.
Michal’s father was a young man when representatives from across the tribes came to the prophet Samuel to insist he find them a king to lead them in decisive victory over the Philistines. Young Saul was crowned king, and his triumphs in battle brought great renown. It is not clear whether Saul was already married, or whether his children had yet been born. But the day Samuel anointed him king over the tribes of Israel, over God’s people, Saul and his relatives became royalty.
Young Michal grew up in a proud family, with comparative wealth and power at her disposal. Her father was handsome, and the tallest man in Israel. Reading into Michal’s story, there is every reason to believe she, too, was tall, strong, and handsome. Michal was also bold, courageous, resourceful, and fully aware of her own dignity.
The tribe of Benjamin was known for its fierce warriors, and for its brutal ways (Judges 19–21). Yet the wars dragged on …
