. Thirty long years dragged on, a generation of people grew old and died, and a new generation grew up with a half-built temple. It felt normal to go about their lives and make do with a priesthood, an altar, musicians, and no more. They invested in their own lives instead, building their homes, improving their towns, marshalling through droughts and rainy times as the people of that land had been doing for thousands of years. Then came Haggai!
Minor Prophets: Haggai, the Backstory
Though now an old man, Haggai was among those first 50,000 faithful men, women, and children who rose to Godโs call to return home. He went as one of two spiritual advisors for Governor Zerubbabel and the priest Jeshua, for these two young men, no older than their thirties, and perhaps still in their twenties, would need the strength of character, spiritual wisdom, and practical guidance of these two middle-aged sages.
Minor Prophets: The Book of Haggai
Haggai received the anointing of God to proclaim four oracles to the people, โA charge I give to you,โ he might have said, โTo remember who you are and to Whom you belong!โ
Minor Prophets: Nahum, Evil Will Be Judged
Nahumโs prophecy continues as an encouragement to you and me today. God will expunge evil around us and within usโeither by the cleansing of repentance, or the cleansing of judgement.
Minor Prophets: Nahum, Nineveh’s Annihilation
Nahum reassured the people of his day that as hopeless as it looked, one day God would deal with Nineveh.
Minor Prophets: Nahum, God’s Wrath
Take a moment and reflect on the nature of God. Think about one word that you might choose to encompass the totality of God, the overarching portrayal of who God is.
Minor Prophets: Nahum, Comfort to Judah
Nahum and Jonah are best read side-by-side, for they offer the two sides of the same coin of God's justice and mercy, wrath and compassion, found in the passage of scripture they both refer to in Exodus 34:6-7
Minor Prophets: The Book of Nahum
To Nahum, God likened the Assyrians to cruel lions, strangling and dragging their prey into their bloody city. Now the righteous lion, the lion of Judah, would put right all the wrong that Assyria had committed.
Minor Prophets: Zephaniah Look Beyond
Zephaniah 3:17-20 is the fulfillment of human longing. At last, those who love God and have put their faith God, will find themselves fully restored in a glorious life that will be lived fully in communion with God, in the peace, and love, and joy of the Lord.
Minor Prophets: Zephaniah, Look Around
Every person has been given the outward revelation of a Creator with eternal power and divine nature, and the inward revelation of Godโs righteousness and justice, carried within their own hearts.
