Gospel of John: Mary of Magdala

All four Gospel accounts describe Maryโ€™s faithfulness and courage, a major financial supporter and patron of Jesusโ€™s ministry, one who remained with Jesus at the foot of his cross until his death, and the first to arrive at his tomb the morning of his resurrection.

Gospel of John: Resurrection Timeline

Though the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) all synchronize with each other, and John seems to stand alone in what it recounts, all four gospels agree on the main events concerning Jesusโ€™s trials, crucifixion, death, and resurrection. Many have sought to create a timeline of events, poring through these four eyewitness accounts, as I will also do, today.

In this twenty minute talk, weโ€™ll first follow Mary through the years she was a student and supporter of Jesus, then we will spend most of our time in the Garden with Mary at Christโ€™s empty tomb, and end with a deeper understanding of ourselves as members of the Body of Christ.

Refusing to abandon Jesus in His darkest hour, all four Gospel accounts describe Mary of Magdalaโ€™s faithfulness and courage, remaining with Jesus, at the foot of His cross, until His death. She had accompanied Jesus and those who had come to know and love Him, on His way to Jerusalem for the last time, to celebrate the Feast of Passover.

Part of our excursion last Saturday was to visit the once bustling and wealthy city of Magdala, where Mary of Magdala came from. Itโ€™s a beautiful settlement, made all of black basalt, which is plentiful in the Galilee from ancient volcanic activity.
