Thirty years before Pentecost, she and the son she carried were filled with God’s Holy Spirit and prophesied

This series of Bible studies seeks to retell the stories of women who were divinely called and empowered to do great things. Many of them rose to the occasion, and a few very famously did not. Often, the tragedies and triumphs in their lives are missed, and their stories are told from perspectives other than with the honor and dignity they deserve.
After excavating their narratives from millennia of obfuscation, now meet the freshly restored, valiant, vivid (and sometimes villainous) women of the Bible.
Elizabeth: Filled with the Spirit
Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah were both from the tribe of Levi. Zechariah traced his lineage through Abijah, but Elizabeth descended from Aaron’s high priestly line. They were what you and I might today call “good people,” godly and devout people who would have loved to raise a family. In their day, it was assumed God always blessed good people with children; yet, Elizabeth and Zechariah were deeply saddened by long years of infertility—and now their opportunity seemed gone.
This thirty-page book includes the retelling of Elizabeth’s story, a fifteen-question Bible study, and link to a twenty-minute multi-media presentation of Elizabeth’s account. Little did she know that a visit from God’s mightiest angel would change their lives forever, and from their aged bodies would come the forerunner to the long-awaited Messiah.
Godly, Righteous, and Faithful
As a Levite priest, Elizabeth’s husband Zechariah had been trained in the Torah (books of Moses), the written law, their wisdom literature and history, their traditions, and their oral law. In Zechariah’s case, it was probably his marriage to Elizabeth, daughter of a priest and descended from Aaron’s high priestly lineage, that entered him into the lottery to serve in the temple.
Elizabeth was godly and wise, living a righteous life before God and others. Her life illustrated great faith, for though she did not receive what was considered the greatest blessing of children, she never grew bitter against God. She quietly endured long years of quiet grief yet continued to faithfully love and serve God.
Living as they did, in a hill country village, Elizabeth and Zechariah may have been considered minor players in the temple community. But then Zechariah received the astonishing and glorious news that aged Elizabeth would now conceive.
